Description
The Senior Companion Program is a friendly visiting program impacting three populations: home-bound older adults, their caregivers, and the Senior Companion Program volunteer. With the support of a Senior Companion Program volunteer, clients are able to remain living independently at home. Volunteers provide weekly home visits and give the older adult the opportunity to develop a relationship with a peer who has similar interests and background. Volunteers provide transportation, assistance to run errands, get to medical appointments, the grocery store and the bank. Services provided by the Senior Companion Program reduce the negative effects of isolation and loneliness and increase an individual's quality of life. Caregivers are family members assisting elderly family members. The caregiver receives a needed break with the support of the Senior Companion Program volunteer who provides respite on a weekly basis. Caregivers can rely on the volunteer to spend time with their loved one while they go to work, run errands and take personal time. This reduces the caregiver stress that occurs when a person has multiple roles and responsibilities to fulfill.
